“The Descendants of Abraham”

مَا كَانَ اِبۡرٰهِيۡمُ يَهُوۡدِيًّا وَّلَا نَصۡرَانِيًّا وَّ لٰكِنۡ كَانَ حَنِيۡفًا مُّسۡلِمًا ؕ وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الۡمُشۡرِكِيۡنَ‏

(3:67) Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian; he was a Muslim, wholly devoted to God.⁵⁹ And he certainly was not amongst those who associate others with Allah in His divinity.

(Holy Qur’an 3:67)

3Abram fell facedown, and God talked to him,

(Genesis 17:3)

            Ibrahiym (Abraham) was an Arabic speaking Muslim. The word Muslim simply means one of peace and comes from the word Salaam and Mu. Mu Salaam or Muslim is the highest title in the universe and is reserved for the servants of G-d (Allah). Allah the life giver and all-knowing says in the 22^nd chapter of the Holy Qur’an, verse 78:

وَجَاهِدُوۡا فِى اللّٰهِ حَقَّ جِهَادِهٖ​ؕ هُوَ اجۡتَبٰٮكُمۡ وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ فِى الدِّيۡنِ مِنۡ حَرَجٍ​ؕ مِلَّةَ اَبِيۡكُمۡ اِبۡرٰهِيۡمَ​ؕ هُوَ سَمّٰٮكُمُ الۡمُسۡلِمِيۡنَ ۙ مِنۡ قَبۡلُ وَفِىۡ هٰذَا لِيَكُوۡنَ الرَّسُوۡلُ شَهِيۡدًا عَلَيۡكُمۡ وَتَكُوۡنُوۡا شُهَدَآءَ عَلَى النَّاسِ​ ​ۖۚ فَاَقِيۡمُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَاٰتُوا الزَّكٰوةَ وَاعۡتَصِمُوۡا بِاللّٰهِؕ هُوَ مَوۡلٰٮكُمۡ​ۚ فَنِعۡمَ الۡمَوۡلٰى وَنِعۡمَ النَّصِيۡرُ

(22:78) Strive in the cause of Allah in a manner worthy of that striving. He has chosen you (for His task), and He has not laid upon you any hardship in religion. Keep to the faith of your father Abraham. Allah named you Muslims earlier and even in this (Book), that the Messenger may be a witness over you, and that you may be witnesses over all mankind. So establish Prayer, and pay Zakat, and hold fast to Allah. He is your Protector. What an excellent Protector; what an excellent Helper!

(Holy Qur’an 22:78)

            Allah (The Creator) lets us know from the above ayats (verses) that the true descendants of Ibrahiym (Abraham) are the righteous, the ones who put Allah (G-d) first and foremost in their lives. Ibrahim’s community or congregation is the ones of peace (Muslim).  The Muslim community is told by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to recite a prayer of blessings on the Prophet Abraham (Ibrahiym) after every one of the five (5) prayers:

(O Allah exalt the mention of Muhammad and his wives and offspring as You exalted the mention of the family of Ibrahiym and bless Muhammad and the wives and the offspring of Muhammad as you blessed the family of Ibrahiym. You are the Praised, the Glorious’).”
